South Yardley Driving Test Centre: What to Expect and How to Prepare

What happens during a practical driving test at South Yardley, the kinds of roads you are likely to meet in east Birmingham, and how to prepare so you feel ready on the day.

South Yardley and east Birmingham learners

South Yardley is one of the practical driving test centres used by learners across east Birmingham, including many from Yardley, Small Heath, Acocks Green, Tyseley and nearby parts of Solihull. If you have a test booked there, or are thinking about booking one, knowing what to expect can make the day feel far more manageable.

This guide explains the standard DVSA practical test format, describes the general types of road found around South Yardley and shares practical preparation tips. It does not describe exact test routes. Examiners use a range of routes, and the aim is to be a safe, confident driver on any road you meet, not to memorise a particular drive.

Booking your test

Under DVSA rules, learners book and hold their own practical driving test. You can book through the official gov.uk service, and you will need your provisional licence details and theory test pass certificate number. Once you have a date, we can plan your intensive course around it, so your lessons build towards the test rather than finishing weeks before it.

If you are learning with 10DayDrive, your course hours include 2.5 hours reserved for test day. That covers a final warm-up lesson and use of your instructor’s car for the test, so you take the test in the car you have been practising in.

What happens on test day

The practical test at South Yardley follows the same national DVSA format as every other test centre. Knowing the structure in advance helps a lot of learners feel calmer, because nothing about the order of events comes as a surprise. The main parts are:

  • An eyesight check: you will be asked to read a number plate from a set distance before you start driving.
  • Show me / tell me questions: these are vehicle safety questions. A “tell me” question is usually asked before you set off, and a “show me” question while you are driving, such as operating the windscreen washers.
  • General driving: around 40 minutes of driving in total, on a mix of road types, during which the examiner gives you directions.
  • Independent driving: about 20 minutes of the test, where you follow directions from a sat nav or traffic signs instead of turn-by-turn instructions from the examiner.
  • One reversing manoeuvre: for example parallel parking, parking in a bay (driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out), or pulling up on the right-hand side of the road and reversing for about two car lengths before rejoining traffic.
  • A possible emergency stop: not every candidate is asked to do one, but you should be ready for it.

The kinds of roads around South Yardley

East Birmingham includes some of the city’s busiest roads alongside quieter residential streets. Without describing any specific route, these are the kinds of road you should be confident on:

  • Coventry Road (A45): a major multi-lane route with traffic lights and junctions, where lane discipline, mirror checks and careful attention to the speed limit are essential.
  • Swan Island: a large, busy junction where you need to read signs and lane markings early, choose the right lane in good time and follow the lane through.
  • Yardley Road and Church Road: local roads with junctions, bus stops and parked cars, where you need to plan ahead and give way with confidence.
  • Acocks Green and Tyseley: a mix of shopping streets, residential roads and junctions, where pedestrians, buses and delivery vehicles all need watching.

Skills worth extra practice

Large, busy junctions such as Swan Island can feel intimidating at first, but they become much easier once you know the routine: read the signs early, get into the correct lane in good time, keep to it, and check your mirrors before any change. Practising these junctions with an instructor, at quiet and busier times, builds the confidence you need to handle them calmly on test day.

On local roads around Acocks Green and Tyseley, the focus shifts to hazard awareness. Look out for pedestrians crossing between parked cars, buses pulling away from stops and vehicles emerging from side roads. Keep your speed appropriate, leave plenty of space, and make early, clear decisions about when to hold back and when to proceed.

How to prepare in the weeks before

Consistent practice in the run-up to your test pays off. These tips help many learners feel ready:

  • Practise every reversing manoeuvre, since the examiner will choose one and you will not know which in advance.
  • Learn the show me / tell me questions early and practise them in your instructor’s car.
  • Practise independent driving by following a sat nav and by following road signs to a destination.
  • Include busy multi-lane roads and large junctions in your practice, not just quiet streets.
  • Do a full mock test with your instructor so a 40-minute drive without coaching feels familiar.

On the day itself

Get plenty of rest, eat before your test and bring your provisional licence. A warm-up lesson just before the test helps calm nerves and gets you back into the rhythm of driving. Arrive in good time so you are not rushed.

If you make a mistake during the drive, carry on and focus on the road. A single error does not automatically mean a fail, and dwelling on it can lead to further faults. If you do not catch an instruction, simply ask the examiner to repeat it.

How an intensive course can help

An intensive course gives you concentrated practice over a short period, so each lesson builds on the last while it is still fresh. For learners with a South Yardley test date, we plan the course to finish close to the test, with practice on the kinds of road described above and a warm-up lesson on the day.

Courses are available in manual and automatic cars, with free pickup across east Birmingham. If you are not sure how many hours you need, a 60-minute driving assessment for £49 lets an instructor check your current level and recommend a suitable course.

See every course, hour and price on our intensive driving courses page, or read about our automatic intensive driving courses.
